Tips, Reservations, and Must-Know Information for an Unforgettable Trip
Carlsbad Caverns National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southeastern New Mexico, offers a mesmerizing journey into a subterranean wonderland. These caves formed over millions of years as sulfuric acid dissolved limestone, creating the vast chambers and intricate speleothems (cave formations like stalactites and stalagmites) seen today. The park protects a portion of the Permian Age Capitan Reef, a well-preserved ancient reef system.
With its colossal chambers, intricate formations, and incredible bat flights, it’s a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and adventurers alike. To help you plan your perfect visit, here’s a comprehensive guide, incorporating essential tips and the latest information.

Top Tips for a Seamless Carlsbad Caverns Experience
Planning your trip in advance is key to making the most of your time at Carlsbad Caverns. The following five tips, based on expert advice, will ensure a smooth and enjoyable visit:
- Reserve Your Entry Time in Advance:
- Carlsbad Caverns is open seven days a week, with entry times starting at 9:30am with the last entry typically around 2:15 PM or 2:30 PM.
- Timed entry reservations are recommended and cost $1 per person. This system effectively manages crowd flow, ensuring a better experience for everyone.
- You have a one-hour window from your reserved time to enter the caverns.
- The park’s cave maintains a consistent temperature of 56 degrees Fahrenheit (13 degrees Celsius) year-round with high humidity, so bringing a sweater or light jacket is highly recommended.
- RV parking is available, but overnight stays and leaving pets in vehicles are not permitted. A kennel service is available for $10 per day.
- Plan Your Food and Drink Wisely:
- Only clear water is allowed inside the cave to protect its delicate ecosystem. All other food and beverages are prohibited inside the caverns.
- There is a restaurant at the gift shop and a snack bar at the bottom of the caverns. Any food purchased underground must be consumed there- however they do not have consistent hours and may be closed when you are hungry.
- It’s advisable to eat before descending into the caverns. The main restaurant for hot food closes at 3:00 PM, though grab-and-go options are often available until 5:00 PM.
- Restrooms: In case you are wondering, there are restrooms at the bottom of the cave, but I recommend you go before you head down 🙂
- Understand Your Entrance and Exit Options:
- Natural Entrance: For an immersive experience, you can hike down the Natural Entrance, a 1.25-mile paved trail that descends approximately 750 feet (about 75 flights of stairs). This steep but scenic route allows you to truly appreciate the cavern’s grandeur.
- Elevator Access: An elevator provides direct access to the Big Room if you prefer not to hike or have mobility concerns. You can also hike down the natural entrance and take the elevator back up.
- Accessibility: A significant portion of the Big Room trail is wheelchair accessible, with entry facilitated by the elevators. The park does not provide mobility chairs or devices for rent.
- Bat Flight Program: From May through October, plan to witness the spectacular evening bat flight, where hundreds of thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from the natural entrance at sunset. An amphitheater near the entrance offers a prime viewing spot for this unforgettable natural phenomenon. Photography and videography are prohibited during this program to avoid disturbing the bats.
- Explore the Magnificent Big Room:
- After reaching the bottom, the self-guided Big Room loop trail spans another 1.25 miles.
- The Big Room is North America’s largest cave chamber by volume, offering breathtaking formations and vast open spaces. The trail within the Big Room is mostly flat and accessible, with a shortcut available if you prefer a shorter walk.
- Allow approximately two to two and a half hours to explore both the Natural Entrance trail and the Big Room.
- Strategize Your Accommodation:
- There are no campgrounds inside the national park, except for backcountry permits.
- The town of Carlsbad, about 28 miles southwest of the park entrance, offers a variety of hotels and RV parks.
- White City, approximately 7 miles from the caverns, is the closest option and has a couple of hotels and a restaurant, making it convenient for attending the evening bat program.- But not my first choice on where to stay. I prefer to stay in Carlsbad.
- Bringing Pets?
- Pets are not allowed at Carlsbad Caverns, and you are not allowed to leave pets in your car at the Carlsbad Cavern Visitor Center. The temperatures in this part of the country are far to hot. Carlsbad Caverns does offer a pet kennel for your use during your visit.
What you may not know about Carlsbad Caverns
- Other Caves: While Carlsbad Cavern is the main show cave, the park encompasses over 120 known caves. Some, like Spider Cave and Slaughter Canyon Cave, are accessible only via ranger-guided tours, which require advance reservations.
- Conservation Efforts: The park is actively engaged in protecting its delicate ecosystem. Efforts are underway to monitor and prevent the spread of White-nose Syndrome (WNS), a deadly fungal disease affecting bats. Visitors are educated on biosecurity measures, and some cave areas may have limited access to protect bat populations.
- Beyond the Cave: Carlsbad Caverns National Park also offers above-ground attractions, including desert hiking trails, the Guadalupe Ridge Trail, and night sky programs (including star parties). The 9.5-mile Walnut Canyon Desert Drive provides scenic views.
- Wildlife: Besides the famous bats, the park is home to a diverse array of wildlife in the Chihuahuan Desert ecosystem, including cougars, various bird species, and unique cave fauna.
- Historical Context: American Indians explored the cavern entrance over a thousand years ago, leaving behind pictographs. Later, in the 1800s, settlers discovered the caverns, initially drawn by the large bat populations and the potential for guano mining.
- Time Zone Awareness: Be aware that the park lies on the edge of a time zone, and cell phone times may fluctuate, so it’s wise to confirm the correct local time upon arrival.

I highly recommend you plan to come back to the park in the evening for the bat flight. It’s a truly unique experience and it’s totally worth it!
