Waiheke Island is one of New Zealand’s most beloved escapes with a blend of golden beaches, boutique vineyards, artists’ studios, and a quietly rebellious history that once made it a haven for free thinkers and bohemian communities. Waiheke is a fantastic day trip from the big city life of Auckland.
Whether you join a guided tour, rent a car, or explore by bus, Waiheke offers a relaxed, sun-soaked day trip that’s easy to navigate and full of small discoveries. This guide covers the essentials: how to get to Waiheke, how to get around, what to do, and a few fun facts to enrich your visit.

How to Get to Waiheke Island
You can reach Waiheke Island from the Downtown Ferry Terminal in Auckland, and there are several ferry companies to choose from. We took the Fuller 360 ferry which departs from Pier 11-12 located behind the ferry building at 99 Quay Street. Here is a direct link to their schedule and prices. It varies greatly depending on the season. Fuller 360 Waiheke Ferry Schedule This company offers several other tours you can check those out from the home page.
You can purchase your tickets ahead of time, or at the terminal, but I recommend arriving at least 30 minutes ahead of time. There are no reserved seats, it’s first come, first serve on the ferry and you can expect all the seats to be filled during high season or on weekends.
If you want to bring your own car over to the island, Sealink offers a vehicle ferry
from Half Moon Bay or Wynyard Quarter.
Island Direct is another ferry service operating from downtown Auckland, if you would like to investigate all your options.
How to Get Around on Waiheke Island
There are no shortage of transportation options on Waiheke. If you are looking for a specialized tour, you may want to check out some of the same areas of interest below.
We had a pre-arranged tour guide with Heke Bus. The guide was super friendly, and knowledgeable about the island. If you are traveling with a group and want to arrange your own transportation, this is a great option.

The public bus system is affordable and easy to use. The most useful route for visitors is Bus 50A/50B, which connects the ferry terminal with key vineyards, Oneroa Village, and Onetangi Beach Check bus details here.
You can rent a car, rent a scooter, or walk to the nearby Oneroa Village to enjoy the cafes, and boutique shops.

Wine tasting is the most popular activity on Waiheke Island. The island is home to more than 20 boutique vineyards, many offering ocean views, relaxed tasting rooms, and award-winning wines.
We visited Casita Miro, a Spanish-influenced vineyard with Gaudí-style mosaics, tapas, and a relaxed, artistic vibe. Other popular wineries include Mudbrick Vineyard, Cable Bay, and Stonyridge.

For a taste of authentic island life, don’t miss the Waiheke Ostend Market, held every Saturday. This vibrant community market is where locals gather to catch up over coffee, shop for fresh produce, and browse handmade goods.
