Auckland

Auckland sprawls across a volcanic landscape between two harbors, home to 1.7 million people- nearly a third of New Zealand’s population! As the country’s largest city and primary international gateway, it serves as most visitors’ introduction to Aotearoa, though its cosmopolitan character feels distinctly different from the rugged wilderness that draws many travelers south.

Here you’ll find a sophisticated urban center where Polynesian and Asian influences shape everything from the dining scene to the cultural institutions, while the surrounding landscape offers surprising proximity to black-sand beaches, island retreats, and remnants of volcanic cones that punctuate the cityscape.

It’s a city that rewards those who linger beyond their initial jet lag, revealing world-class museums, thriving wine regions within easy reach, and a harbourside culture that makes the most of its spectacular maritime setting.

We started our adventure here, flying in from Los Angeles. We traveled independently to Waitomo and the Coromandel, then came back to Auckland to meet up with a travel group to continue our exploration of New Zealand.

For an excellent day trip from Auckland, you may be interested in exploring the gorgeous island of Waiheke!
