The Rich History of La Posada
The original mansion was built by Abraham Staab, a prominent German-Jewish merchant who became one of Santa Fe’s most influential businessmen. The Victorian mansion he constructed for his bride Julia became the foundation for what would eventually become La Posada Resort.

Built in 1882, the original Staab House can be found in the main lobby building and it doubles as an art gallery! Be sure and walk through during your stay.

The Haunted Legacy: Julia Staab’s Ghost
Julia Staab’s tragic story has become intertwined with the resort’s identity.
One of the first recorded reports in 1979 tells of an employee cleaning late in the night and looking up to see a beautifully dressed translucent woman standing near a fireplace. On another occasion, a security guard saw the same woman and was so scared he took off running.
Julia’s ghost is not described as “unsettling” or “frightening.” Recorded sightings of the ghostly activity have included gas fireplaces turning on and off, swaying chandeliers, and items in certain guestrooms vanishing.
Most activity occurs around Room 256 which belonged to Julia Staab, the former bedroom of the mansion’s original mistress. Guests and staff continue to report unusual occurrences in this area.
Ghost Package Experience The resort offers a Julia Staab American Ghost Package, providing trademark La Posada de Santa Fe hospitality while guests gain an appreciation of the resort’s heritage.
