The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), the world’s largest museum dedicated to a single civilization, is set to fully open on July 3, 2025. While partially open since October 2024, the full opening will showcase the complete Tutankhamun collection and other extensive exhibits.
I had been following the opening of this museum and almost didn’t go to Egypt, thinking I would wait until it’s open, but for several personal reasons, I decided to go ahead with the trip.
To my surprise, the museum just announced a ‘soft opening’ with twelve new galleries the day prior to me showing up at the ticket office, I couldn’t believe it!
The atrium of this museum is the most beautifully designed, highlighting this enormous statue of Ramses II that stood in central Cairo for many years!
For more details on visiting the Grand Egyptian Museum- check out the video below. You’ll see the atrium, all 12 open galleries, the food court and gift shop! More tips below:
Tickets can be purchased on site in person at the ticket office. As a reminder, cameras are not allowed inside (cell phones are ok)- you will be asked to place your cameras with the security desk while you are visiting- they will keep it safe.
Eventually, they will have electric buses that will transport visitors between the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum. I am not sure if this will be available for the grand opening in July 2025. As discussed in my video- the streets surrounding the GEM are not easily walkable, so even if you are staying close by, arrange transportation to the GEM.
