An Affordable, Centrally Located Gem with Old-World Charm
If you’re looking for a centrally located hotel in Barcelona that’s full of character and still affordable, Hotel Nouvel is worth a serious look. Tucked just off La Rambla, this locally owned hotel made a perfect base for exploring the city’s historic core.
We discovered it through Rick Steves’ Spain travel guide, and it we were very happy with our choice. It’s housed in a 19th-century building with antique details and vintage touches that make it feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
Why We Chose Hotel Nouvel
- Centrally Located: Just steps from La Rambla, Plaça Catalunya, and the Barcelona Cathedral—everything we wanted to see was a short walk away.
- Locally Owned: This isn’t a big hotel chain—it’s a family-run property with heart and history.
- Triple Rooms Available: We needed space for three and were able to find a comfortable triple room that fit our budget, which isn’t always easy in central Barcelona.
- Spacious Patio: Our room included a large patio. The view wasn’t memorable, but the quiet space was a great spot to relax.
- Old-World Charm: The vintage floors, chandeliers, and architecture gave the hotel a timeless, elegant feel.
One Thing to Know
Hotel Nouvel has an on-site restaurant, but I can’t comment on it-we ended up skipping it entirely—a bakery across the street had excellent pastries and coffee at great prices, so we grabbed breakfast there each morning before heading out to explore.
Would We Stay There Again?
Yes—without hesitation. For travelers looking for a budget-friendly hotel in Barcelona with charm and a prime location, Hotel Nouvel is a fantastic option. The atmosphere, affordability, and walkability made it a great fit for our trip.
The front desk was exceptionally friendly and accomodating. We were very happy with our stay!

A Few Things to Note
The road is not easily accessible for cars and taxis. When we first arrived from the train station, they dropped us off in Placa Catalunya (just North of the Hotel) and we had to walk around the block with our bags. Everything was fine, but I wasn’t a fan of lugging the suitcase around in the crowded areas. The hotel did offer to arrange for taxi pick up right in front of the hotel. You’ll pay a little more to get where you’re going because it takes some time to maneuver the little streets, but it was convenient with our suitcases when it was time to leave, it probably cost an extra five euros for the convenience.
If you are used to American amenities, you need to know, there is no free coffee in the room. They do have a safe and provided bottled water. The cafe across the street was delicious and very reasonable priced! Just a few steps to a delicious cup of hot coffee in the morning!
