Nestled along the tranquil banks of the Nile River in southern Egypt, Aswan offers travelers a perfect blend of ancient wonders, natural beauty, and Nubian culture. Aswan serves as the gateway to Nubia, with its distinctive cultural heritage, stunning desert landscapes, and monumental temples. The city’s strategic location at the first cataract of the Nile made it a vital trading post throughout Egyptian history and continues to make it an essential stop on any Egyptian itinerary.
The Aswan High Dam was built here in the 1960’s and it reshaped Upper Egypt drowning many monuments in the wake of Lake Nasser.
This is also the starting point for visitors on a mission to see Abu Simbel. Make sure to allow some time to visit Aswan before heading further South.

We slept on our cruise ship here in Aswan, and a lovely walk along the Promenade was indeed, so lovely! Just like Luxor, there are plenty of opportunities for felucca rides as well. The Nile River is very scenic!
The vendors at Sharia es Souq were not as pushy here as we had seen in other touristy spots across Egypt. There weren’t as many tourists here either. This market is close to the train station behind the governate building.
Some of our friends had trouble finding it- here is a map of the location.
Just south of Aswan lies a vibrant Nubian village, where you can learn about the rich traditions of Egypt’s southern people. Enjoy colorful homes, local crafts, and the warm hospitality of the Nubian community.

This museum is a bit of a hidden gem, not very crowded, and is a real treat, showcasing the history, art and culture of Nubia. The museum was established in 1997, in cooperation with UNESCO as a reminder of the Nubian sites and the Kingdom of Kush that was lost under the water of Lake Nasser.
